The cargo steamship Egle was owned by Mario Zoboli of Genoa, where it was registered at the Maritime Department with the registry number 1352. It was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in July 1942. On March 29, 1943, while navigating from Cagliari to La Maddalena, around 10:17 AM, approximately 1 mile from Cape Carbonara, it was torpedoed by the Dutch submarine Dolfijn and sank, with confirmed casualties, as evidenced by the discovery of a skull during a dive by the diving unit of the Carabinieri Corps. It was carrying coal, parts of which can still be seen during dives.

The wreck is marked by a buoy or guide line fixed to the bow winch. Descending along the line, one can gauge the presence or absence of current, which will determine the route to be taken. The wreck becomes visible after 10-15 meters. Upon reaching the deck, the presence of the large coal cargo that caused the wreck to collapse during the sinking is evident. The stern part is completely missing, likely due to the torpedo explosion. Circumnavigating the ship clockwise leads to the sandy and entangled bow, where small colonies of Gorgonians, predominantly Eunicella cavolinii, can be seen. Circling the bow, you traverse the sandy hull side, which has formed a deep den for numerous sharp-snouted breams (Diplodus puntazzo), while on the left side on the sandy bottom, you can spot schools of Red Mullet (Mullus barbatus) scraping the bottom with their long barbels. Moving towards the stern plates, it's advisable to head left towards some large granite boulders (about 20 meters away) that host large Dusky Groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) and Moray Eels (Muraena helena), and further back, an ammunition box. You then return to the deck near the winch. Among the metal plates, the saponified and very fragile logbook can still be found, and it is advisable to only glance at it from a distance. About 17-18 minutes have passed and the dive computer signals to ascend. Goodbye, Egle.
