The tanker ship Isonzo was part of a convoy of three ships along with the Loredan and the Entella, sailing from Cagliari to La Maddalena. On April 10, 1943, about 12 miles off Cape S. Elia, the convoy was attacked by a British submarine, the Safari, under the command of Commander B. Bryant. He launched four torpedoes, two of which sank the Loredan, while the other two hit the Isonzo, one at the stern and the other below the bridge. The Isonzo lifted its bow and settled on the seabed on its starboard side within 15 minutes.

We descend by holding tightly to the guide rope that takes us directly to the ship. At 6 meters, let's remember to give a final check to the emergency tank, which will provide us with air for a possible decompression stop. During the descent in mid-water, a beautiful school of dentex can be seen. Upon reaching the upper plates, we climb over the command castle, which we will visit last. In front of the bridge extends the long forward deck, which sometimes seems endless. We will almost immediately find some open hatches on which we can peek but avoid entering due to the poor condition of the plates. We continue past other access hatches to the holds. The deck to our left now features two machine guns and the base of a cargo boom. Two winches still show the wrapped chains. On the bow, the cannon points upwards and an anchor stands prominently; we are now at -58 meters, the maximum depth of our dive. We go back, ascending a few meters to return to the castle area where we will find the guide rope again. It's time to ascend; the decompression stop awaits us. Farewell Isonzo.
